Changing My Opinion/Attitude about School

Changing My Opinion/Attitude about School

When I was growing up, the last thing that was on my mind was school.  I enjoyed it when I was in elementary school, but as I got older I didn’t seem to enjoy it as much.  By the time I was a sophomore in high school, I was missing a lot of school but still passed all my classes with a C or better.  I was even going to summer school just to get ahead on credits.  When I became a junior is when it all went downhill.  I was only attending school for my math and ROP classes, which were the classes later in my day.  I missed probably about half the school year in all my other classes, but was able to pass all classes except English.  When I became a senior I didn’t even bother to get up in the morning.  I was working full-time and felt like I didn’t need to bother with school.  Upon returning to school after winter break, following my 18th birthday, I checked myself out of school.  My mom didn’t even know, but she didn’t really have any say since I was already an adult by law, but nowhere even near an adult mentally.

Now, I know school is important.  When my boss was let go about 2 years ago was a red flag to me that I need to start thinking about my future.  I started to think if I was to be let go I would have to start at the bottom and work my way up at another company.  I do way more work than my job title would have you believe.  And I know it’s all politics when it comes to that because I don’t have a college degree.  So, I decided to register for college and after my first semester I realized that I actually really enjoy school.  Since I’ve started 1 ½ years ago, I have been getting really good grades, which are way better than the grades I got in junior high and high school.  English was never a strong subject for me and I really didn’t care for it much.  Since I’ve been attending college, English has been a subject that I have really enjoyed and learned the most in.  Prior to this class, I took English 86 and 96 and passed both classes with an A, which surprised me since I have failed or barely passed my English classes with D’s since junior high.  I really think it is because mentally I want to go to school and don’t feel that it’s because I have to.  I am going to embrace my whole college experience and learn as much as I can.

  2. I think sometimes we need a little push to realize that we can have so much more if we are determined to do so. Best wishes in your future goals.
